These days, people are traveling by air more frequently to different destinations in the Philippines and other parts of the world thanks to the discounted airline tickets offered by major carriers. Their rock-bottom prices—which can be as much as half the price of a regular airline ticket—make them so attractive that they would practically sell more quickly than hotcakes.
However, there are a few travelers who choose to still go and buy airline tickets at the regular price instead of taking advantage of these airline ticket deals. Surprisingly enough, those that do so claim that if you really calculate everything, discounted airline tickets are not as cheap as they first appear. In fact, they would sometimes even cost more than buying airline tickets at their regular price.
Problems with Discounted Airline Tickets
1. Discounted airline tickets dictate when you can travel.
Unlike regular priced airline tickets that will allow you to travel based on your schedule, discounted airline tickets are the complete opposite. More often than not, the flights with the lowest prices are those that have schedules either very early in the morning or very late at night. That means that you will need to work your schedule around in order to take advantage of these discounted airfare.
2. Discounted airline tickets have expensive rebooking fees.
Cheap airline tickets are non-refundable. If for any reason you will not be able to travel on the date specified on your ticket, you cannot get your money back. Instead, airlines would convert the value into credits that you can use to book another flight on a later date provided that you pay the rebooking fee and the difference in price between your current ticket and the new one your booking. The problem is that many times, the rebooking fee alone is almost the same price as your original ticket. Add the difference between your discounted airfare and the new airline ticket, and you can easily end up paying so much more.
3. Discounted airline tickets don’t earn you mileage points.
Major airline companies have frequent traveler clubs where members can earn mileage points during their trips. These points can be used to book a ticket for a later date for free. Unfortunately, airlines do not extend this perk if you buy one of their discounted airline tickets.
4. Service with a Price.
One of the reasons why airlines are able to offer discounted airline tickets is because they took out a lot of the services travelers have come to expect before and during a flight. These include meal and beverage service, check-in luggage, seat selection, and even the use of pillows. Travelers that purchased discounted airfares can still avail of these services, but they will have to pay an extra fee for this, making your trip anything but comfortable, especially if your flight will last longer than a couple of hours.
Discounted airline tickets do have its downside, but that does not mean to say that you need to avoid them like the plague. For those that need to travel right on the last minute, these cheap airline tickets are heaven sent.
It is, however, important to take time to read through the terms and conditions before availing of these airline ticket deals. Carriers will provide a list of the terms and conditions of the ticket as a link underneath your chosen flight details before you buy them online. If there are some things that you don’t understand, go ahead and call the airline’ customer service and ask. Weigh these against your travel requirements and compare them with regular priced airline tickets to see which one will give you the best option for your travel needs.
