No doubt, social media has made a huge impact in our lives. It has changed a lot of the way we do things. That includes going on vacation.
From getting ideas where you’ll be going on vacation to scouting the best airline and hotel deals, and even sharing details about your trip, social media is there with you every step of the way.
MDG Advertising’s infographic points to mobile technology as the reason why social media has become an integral part before, during and after a trip. Even though the numbers are based on Americans going on vacation, these can also be seen among Filipinos.

Gosh. When think about it, I engage in most all of the activities listed… LOL. I use FB to post picture, Twitter to stay in touch and anything and everything possible to help make the trip as fun as possible. It’s so amazing that all of these things can be done on our iPhone and iPad.

It’s amazing to see how social media has influenced vacations. I didn’t think Facebook will come above TripAdvisor for travel inspiration though.

I actually was surprised myself, Shamis. I’m thinking it’s because Facebook allows us to share our experiences in a more candid fashion. No need to worry about our posts first being screened before they are published. Would love to read your take on this, too.
Social media now is the main source of traffic to our blog. #1 source of my traffic is google but twitter and fb closely follow behind. Its the best way to promote anything online.

I couldn’t agree with you more, Carl! Thanks so much for dropping by.
Traveling has been a lot easier because of social media in terms of easier booking and getting feedback from different destination is faster, which leads to better researched and planned trips.

That’s so true, Franc. We can easily get feedback from our friends and relatives about a particular place, which I consider more reliable than going to other sites, don’t you think so?

For me, Facebook is for travel inspiration. Tripadvisor is for finding accommodations and things to do in unfamiliar places. But when I’m already in that place, I try to enjoy the limited time that I’m there so I usually go offline. Back home after a trip, I share travel experiences through Facebook and my blog. I also rate places and experiences in Tripadvisor.

Nicely created infographic. There is no doubt that social media plays an role in all aspects of life be it social, travel or just day to day. I think Facebook has been the most important. Social media to build up that getaway and then use it to post images, updates and what not. Its not only exciting but also a great way to let the whole world know what you are doing or planning to do.

I think you’re right, Shalu. When it comes to keeping in touch with friends and relatives, and seeing where they’ve been, Facebook is definitely in the lead. Although Instagram seems to be gaining pace. What do you think?
Planning for a vacation before takes so much effort due to unavailability online, but now, yes it is easier to plan with so much information available on the net and even we see a lot of travel blogs/experiences in the world wide web…

I think social media has been a huge help for businesses (free advertisement) and for people who wants to receive prompt and honest reviews. It’s a whole new level of spreading the word and it’s usually more honest and more convincing. Also, it’s a great way of sharing stories to friends and family. I particularly love checking-in social networks, it’s like an instant checklist of things to do in the area while on vacation.

Adeline,
It has certainly become a Mobile world. Problem is, there is no way to just go on vacation, forget about your current life and just relax. If I don’t have internet access, I have more difficulty relaxing. As long as I have either my smart phone or my notebook available, and I can check in intermittently, then I can really relax and enjoy my vacation spot.
Warmly,
Dr. Erica

It is through social media that I was convinced to do my own travel blog — and the rest is history. From then on, I relied on social media for updates, may that be on discounted deals from airlines that I follow (FB or Twitter) or travel tips that may come in handy for a future or presently booked adventure. And even when I’m on a trip, I still go online and check my Facebook, regardless if I’m checking-in at a nice hotel or about to board the plane. The growth of the social media has definitely pulled me into its prowess. As a traveler, social media has already been a big part of me.
We I’m on vacation, social media plays its role by broadcasting the latest photos I have in my phone. Other than that, nothing else really.
So true! my travels and journeys as well as my blog is because of social media’s impact. social media not just influence, it affects!

I think social media plays a big part in my family’s travel plans. We keep our eyes on Facebook pages to see if there are any special deals. We look at reviews before we book any places. We choose restaurants based on ratings and customer feedback. And, of course, we are social while we are travelling…sharing every picture and video that we possibly can.

Such an insightful blog post. I normally use Facebook to upload and share my experiences for my friends and relatives to see. I regularly look for some deals online for cool travel and food experiences.Social Media is already part of our lives no wonder Facebook recently hit 1 Billion users
Inforgraphics are really cool in showing information to its readers. I’ve been collecting those since they have been appearing. Though I miss having a vacation outside home
Cool!
when i started traveling, facebook and even multiply is where my photos are.
before I discovered the joys of chronicling in a blog post.
Now, i keep FB to my personal photos, of myself being in places.
While in blogging, the best of my travel photos and inspirations while on the road is shared.
I have just started to use Social Media while traveling. I just bought a sim with internet flat rate and this became very helpful to me. I took pictures and post them to FB using my Instagram. I just love it.

Hi Adeline,
I have to say I have not traveled much, but the image on your post just goes to show, what a different generation I am living in! I loved the image and the “tracking? paths to planning a trip. Pretty amazing … so as of yet, I have no knowledge or experience in using social media for travel or planning a vacation. But, who knows what the future will bring – but I’ll remember the above image, for sure!

Every time we drive away from our house, my husband and I check to make sure we have our cell phones — and not just to receive calls — our primary use of them is for social media. Once recently, I saw a friend at church leave in the middle of the service, whispering, “I left my phone at home. I feel lost without it. I’m going to get it, then I’ll come back.” We feel lost without our social connector. And, yes, I often check for user comments about hotels and restaurants before making my reservation! In fact, we are leaving on vacation, driving to Tennessee and Florida, today! (Social media comments about Lego World changed our plans to visit there!)
Happy traveling!
Hope you had a great trip, Linda. Yes, it’s amazing how much social media has changed and become so much a part of our lives at such a short span of time that we sometimes feel so lost without it.
Social media doesn’t really play a big role when I go on vacations. Whenever I’m about to leave for days or weeks of relaxation, I try to get as detached from my online life, as I can be
