The most promising students from the top culinary schools in the Philippines go face to face once again at the 3rd Grand Culinary Challenge. Hailed as the toughest collegiate culinary arts competition in the country to date, this year’s competition will be held at Villa Immaculada inside historic Intramuros, Manila from September 26 to 27, 2012.
About the Grand Culinary Challenge
The Grand Culinary Challenge is the only food service competition in the Philippines that focuses on culinary arts students. It’s mission is to give these students a glimpse into the real world of the food service industry so that they would not only be prepared to work in some of the best restaurants and hotels in the world, but also equipped with the know-how to set up their own food service business.
Events in the Grand Culinary Challenge
Students competing in this year’s Grand Culinary Challenge will face off in ten unique competitions, each designed to challenge them to strike a balance between food preparation and taste, kitchen versatility and efficiency, and profitability against cost per serving. Here are some of the events:
Grand Culinary Challenge Dream Team
This team catering competition is the highlight of the entire event. Teams from different culinary schools in the Philippines are given a taste of what it is like working in a real restaurant, from designing an appealing table setting to serving and attending to the dining needs of the judges who will be posing as real dinner guests.
The Creative Filipino Merienda
In this competition, the culinary students’ ability to think out of the box is challenged as they are tasked to prepare and plate their own twist to any popular Filipino merienda (Filipino word for snack) dish in less than an hour.
The Grand Bartending Challenge
Students are given just six minutes to prepare their unique drinks in this flair bartending challenge.
The Grand Barista Challenge
Held in conjunction with the Barista Guild of the Philippines, culinary arts students’ are tasked to create their own coffee concoction using a secret ingredient specifically chosen for this event.
