As part of its goal to promote and enhance the growth of the film industry in the Philippines he Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) launches the 1st ever Cine-Phone Film Festival. This is one of the new film categories under the MMFF New Wave Student Section, which was put together last year to recognize the talent of today’s Filipino youth in storytelling and filmmaking.
About the Cine-Phone Film Festival
What makes this unique from other national film competitions is that it all the movie entries will be made using just a cellphone. Apart from showing that the MMFF is updating itself with current technological trends, the competition is one way of showing that you don’t need fancy video cameras and complicated editing software programs to come up with a good movie.
For this year’s Cine-Phone film festival, the entries should focus on the theme: “Restoring Road Courtesy Among Motorists and Pedestrians.”
Here is a video where Director Paul Soriano, head of the MMFF Student Section, explains more about the upcoming Cine-Phone Film Festival:
What’s in Store for the Participants?
The 60 students whose entries passed the preliminary screening will have the opportunity to learn more about filmmaking through a workshop facilitated by Director Soriano. Each of the finalists will also receive loot bags courtesy of Smart and the Manila Bulletin.
Six winners will be chosen from these 60 finalists. The winners will be awarded during the 38th MMFF Awards Night on coming December 27, 2012. Each of the winners will receive a cash prize of P25, 000 as well as a host of other prizes, including film course scholarships and a one-year internship program with Viva Productions, one of the biggest film production companies in the Philippines.
How Do I Join the Cine-Phone Film Festival?
The Cine-Phone Film Festival is opened to all high school and college students all over the Philippines. Visit the Official MMFF Website to learn more about the mechanics and to download the forms you’ll need to submit your entry. You can also visit their Facebook Page and follow them on Twitter to stay updated on the latest news about the Cine-Phone film festival and other announcements by the MMFF.

Hi Adel,
Here I am visiting your Blog for the first time, but I am sure that i will be a regular visitor.
WHo would have thought that you can make an entire film from a cell phone, but obviously, it is very possible. The amazement of technological advancement!!
Sounds like a wonderful way to engage young people and reward them with a sense of accomplishment. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Direk Paul looks good. =) I think that video was taken through a phone, what a good way to promote the cinephone film festival!
I think Cine Phone is the first of its kind. I’m just wondering what cellphone units would be preferred in doing the films. It’s a little bit hard to find the right phone since the participants will be students.
I heard from the video that Direk Paul is going to Davao for a workshop, I hope I can attend. =)
I was also thinking that same thing when I saw the video, given the way that the image is framed in YouTube.
The Cine-Phone is the first of its kind here in the Philippines, but there have been a few mobile film competitions that have already come out before. I remember there was something like this that Nokia launched as part of their promotion for their N93 phone. Best thing about that contest was that it was a Filipina who won the top award.
As for the cellphone, I’m guessing that will be one of the topics that Direk Paul will talk about in the workshop. Not only on which phone brand or model to use, but also how to get the best shots regardless of the phone model or brand.
You can check out their FB page to find out the schedule of the workshop.
Thanks so much for dropping by.
Galing na talaga ng mga apps now. May Cine-Phone nah. Thanks for sharing this with us Ms.Adele.

I know exactly how you feel, Justin. My brother was able to join something similar to this back in their school. They even had a mobile film class. Times have really changed.
What an excellent idea. With so many kids using cellphones this competition should be able to attract a huge amount of entries. I am sure there are many wannabe film makers out there who will jump at the chance, many with talents which would otherwise have gone unrecognized.

That’s true, Sue. That was actually one of the reasons why they decided to use cellphones as the medium of choice. It’s also going to teach them to be more creative in terms of being able to do something spectacular with what they have. Thanks so much for dropping by.
This is actually a very cool idea! Who would have thought of it!? And yeah, it does let people know film can be made with the simplest of tools. I love especially that they are doing this for the young people so that they can explore what they can actually do/achieve. Cool post!

What a creative way to express visual creativity! =) It always surprises me how some of the most captivating video clips are the spontaneously captured ones, often on cell phones. I’ve been watching a lot of CNN lately and a lot of the best moments are blurry and shaky, but oh so real. Do keep us posted on the winner! =)

This is a really good initiative. I’m a big fan of low budget independent films (Cinemalaya is my artsy thing) and this kind of venture encourages even the amateur YouTube videographer to produce some really good and striking content. It’s time for the ‘small stage’ artists to have a go at promoting their talents!
